Hoist Manoeuvre | Bed to Chair

01. Applying a sling

  • Place hand over chest (opposite arm from side they are rolling to)
  • Raise knee (same side as arm)
  • These create high points to roll from
  • Once on their side put the sling in place trying to feed as much under the person as possible
  • Roll to opposite side if needed to flatten the sling
  • Bring the legs straps under the legs – checking for neatness and no folds
  • Cross the leg loops through for a further point of contact

02. Attaching a sling

  • To get a seated position - short arms & Long Legs
  • Attach the suitable loops to the hoist
  • Lower the bed to its lowest setting before raising the hoist

03. Hoisting out of a bed

  • Before the hoist raises the person double check the loops
  • Support may be needed at the persons head as the start to lift off the bed
  • Raise just enough to clear the bed
  • Pull the hoist out from under the bed smoothly
  • The hoist may move slightly while the person is rising – this is the hoist finding its centre of gravity

04. Hoist to Chair

  • Be mindful of the hoist components when the person is in the hoist
  • Open the legs on the hoist for more stability
  • Manoeuvre the hoist to the chair and position over the chair
  • Lower into the chair keeping the load as close as possible
  • Be mindful of the spreader bar near the face when lowering

05. Chair Reposition

  • Confirm if the person is comfortable and readjust if need be
  • Lower the hoist then change the loops on the shoulder straps to allow a more upright position
  • Raise the person up again and reposition the hoist
  • Lower the person back down into the chair. Once they are seated and the hoist is still lowering the hoist can be pulled out slightly to stop it hitting the person
  • Remove the staps off and move the hoist out of the way

06. Re Sling

  • Kneel in front of the person if it is safe to do so and ask them to place their foot on you knee
  • Remove the sling from under their leg then repeat on the other side
  • Ask the person to lean forward to remove the sling from behind them
